This was an upsetting read at the time and is still painful even knowing that the CEO of Roscorp recovered well. I hope several somebodys bashed their trolleys into Oscar's owner's Porsche Cayenne in the car park of the Waitrose where I imagine they shop for overpriced olives.
Our cat Jamie has taken to sleeping in my office chair in the post-Covid working from home world, and always regards me with a look of "HR need to have a talk with you" if I accidentally disturb him.
At the end of the day I always like to tell my cats “Great job being a cat”, so they know they've done a great job at being a cat that day. Great job being a cat, Roscoe. And great job being a human, Tom.
God I remember reading this the first time with my heart in my mouth as I wished and willed Roscoe to recover. It’s quite a surprise that it’s now 8 years on, which means I’ve been concerned about the well-being of your cats for at least that long. Possibly having a glorious black daemon of melancholy nature who lived to 21 gave me a sense of camaraderie. I was so happy to read every step of Roscoe’s recovery and hope it’s all a distant memory in her cat brain. Now I have a tabby thug (currently snoring like a ghost in search of someone to haunt) and a cow cat who moved in with him from a perfectly good home over the end of the garden. He is a night burrower.
Ah Tom Cox! I read a couple of your cat books a number of years back and loved them! So funny, and touching. Glad to have come across you here on Substack, I will be looking into your newer weird books that the publishing industry knew better than to publish. Lol. So glad Roscoe is doing well, what an ordeal for you and this sweetie.
I miss being able to let my cats outdoors. I wish I could give them that freedom. There is a big movement here in the States to keep cats inside. I tried to adopt a cat from a shelter and was denied because I let them out. Then I moved to an apartment and they weren’t allowed out and now I’m in a house but have decided to keep them in. The main problem here is that they kill song birds which are already in trouble with loss of habitat. On the plus side I save a small fortune in flea medicine.
I have six cats. At my home i use wood fence as well as farm style wire fencing and hedge to create a barrier - so my cats go outside every day to survey their kingdom. I am their slave. And they thank me with countless hours of sweet pure love. Beastly the tuxedo punk. Samwise who is emotional support for my ginger Boxer dog Alice - and identifies as a a ginger Boxer. Babe the Bengal. Jasper the rag-doll who is her husband. ILYA the kitten. And 16 year old granny Chickadee- the cat with more than 9 lives and my first rescue in 2008 in a -30C Saskatoon Saskatchewan.
My Garf wants to go out and has done so a few times but usually gets no further than my neighbour’s stoop where he stops to sniff and then gets freaked out by a car door closing or kids talking a block away and dashes back in. He DID get out one day and disappeared, finally found by a neighbour investigating my back yard.
We have a busy road a block away and coyotes (and in the past, fishers) which prowl in our neighbourhood so I am determined that he’ll stay in. Besides, I live in a Cooperative community and bylaws forbid cats to roam or dogs off-leash. One neighbour’s cat got out twice and her neighbour complained to the Board which gave her the choice of rehoming her cat or being evicted which I think is appalling.
She ended up having to rehome him because she can’t afford to move. That’s criminal.
Garf is a big orange floof with multi-toes (6 toes on each foot, including one dangly thumb). He’s an idiot but I love him. Of course, he loves me, likely because he thinks I’m an idiot which is fair, I suppose.
So pleased to meet Roscoe. I know from experience Christmas nursing an injured animal . Im do pleased the she healed and that it was possible because of Tom and love.
Beautiful, loving, sad, and sweet story about Roscoe...I loved this so much,Tom.I've had so many horrible incidents over the years with my cats...some stray and ferals I've taken care of too;and people and their dogs. They didn't care one iota and did nothing to keep their dogs in,or laughed and thought it was funny.Recently, something horrible happened with a neighbor of mine who takes great care of quite a few stray cats...the woman did nothing about her loose dogs even though the awful event was captured on several people's cameras.Glad Roscoe is on the mend, hope she will continue on as her cool self, and still going outdoors.Thank you for your wonderful cat stories...😸
Oh don’t our cats affect us! I went through that surgical drama many years ago with the first beautiful tabby girl in our family but reading this has caused so many up and down emotions it is now going to help to start my reading again with one of your books! if you know what I mean… one at a time!
Thank you for writing about Roscoe! I've never even met her but I already love her and her spirit! My kitties are so very important to me and I understand how special she must be to you. 😻

Loved this piece. Thank you for sharing Roscoe’s story. Beautiful ✌️
Thanks Elizabeth!
I am that Crazy Cat Lady so much so I have a sanctuary for wayward and unwanted feral kitties so have had a few Roscoes in my life❤️
Long-live Roscoe (outdoors, of course)

This was such a beautiful read 🥹
Thank you!
Absolutely! I miss the bear a lot so his cameo is always a welcome joy, it made me get the books off the shelf for a binge after work! ☺️
😢😊
