A friend of mine was a recording engineer on an early Teardrop Explodes album. The band was invited for its first appearance on Top of the Pops. When my friend asked Julian what it had been like he said “ Yellow…it was very yellow…..”. I don’t think he was referring to spit, but who knows, he might have had yellow Smarties on his rider.

I’d sadly never heard of Julian, thank you for bringing him to light! Yours was a very special bond - you must ask for a top up.

Wonderful writing! The mention of saliva is probably an instant hook for a lot of people (for many different reasons) to keep on reading. I'm glad I got hooked! Thanks brother.

I've been a fan of Julian Cope since high school (early 90s), and this is absolutely perfect. Thank you. I'll be sending a link to all 2 of my friends who also love him.

I found this post intriguing however I have to admit I recoiled when reading about the spit. Excellent writing Tom. I had never heard of Julian before reading this although recognised the song 'World Shut Your Mouth' when I typed his name into you tube. He sounds like a unique character.

I share a birthday with Julian Cope. I loved 'The Modern Antiquarian ' I borrowed Devon Libraries' last battered copy a couple of years ago.

I feel very fortunate to still have the copy I bought on the week of its release.
